The Vanilla Pod Restaurant relocates to “The Cridford Inn”, Trusham

In September of 2003, Ian and Tracey Nixon began living the dream of owning their own restaurant and opened The Vanilla Pod in Torquay. With Ian’s award winning experience, it was very quickly a resounding success. With this success in mind, Ian and Tracey decided to expand on their experience and purchased “The Cridford Inn” in the picturesque village of Trusham, in the Teign Valley.

Trusham itself was first recorded in the Domesday book in 1086 and the site where the Cridford Inn now stands was thought to have been one of the nine smallholdings mentioned within it. In the 14th Century, “The Cridford” was a farm and the stain-glassed window in the current bar dates back to this period and is possibly the oldest example of a Medieval window in the country. The building itself is one of the few remaining Devon Longhouses.

In recent years, the Inn itself has not been used to its full potential and therefore Ian and Tracey spent three weeks refurbishing the property in its entirety. The Vanilla Pod restaurant is on one side of the property with the same high standard of A La Carte dining as it had in Torquay. In addition to this, there is a bar and a family room. The bar serves various beers, local ales and spirits, including guest ales. There is an extensive bar food menu available. A childrens menu is also available.

Sunday lunch is a winner at £12.95 for 3 courses or 2 courses £10.95

The restaurant is a wonderful experience with fine dining and fine wines. It has an elegant look with co-ordinating linen and the most comfortable chocolate and cream leather chairs you will ever sit on. A mosaic date stone lights up the centre of the floor and soft music plays in the background. Some of the choices on the menu include Sauteed Exmoor Venison haunch with a wild mushroom and thyme jus. Or Seared West Country fillet steak topped with caramelized red onion marmalade, Devon Blue cheese with a red wine sauce. For a dessert why not try Ian’s speciality, the Vanilla Pod chocolate cup. There is an excellent choice of coffee styles; just ask your waiter/waitress at the end of your meal. The menu changes monthly and you can download this from the web site. It is excellent value at £24.95 for 3 courses.

Upstairs in the main building, guest accommodation of four bedrooms, each complete with en-suite facilities, have been completely refurbished. The décor of these rooms is in keeping with the rustic feel of the building, but also have a modern edge. For those staying overnight, breakfast will be included in the rate and will be prepared and cooked by Ian himself or his second chef.

Residents of these rooms and visitors to the Bar and Restaurant must be prepared to share the property with the two resident ghosts. One of the ghosts is thought to be a nun and the second a Cavalier from Trusham’s conflict with Ashton during the civil war. None of the members of the family have had the pleasure of meeting either ghost yet, but no doubt they will in time…..

The Cridford Inn is a popular location for Weddings, particularly as it is just 2 miles from Belvedere Castle.

The Cridford Inn has a Christmas party menu at £18.95 for 2 courses and £22.95 for 3 courses. It is also open for Xmas Day lunch .
